President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Friday that Ukrainian forces have attacked a Russian oil refinery in Yaroslavl, located approximately 700 kilometers (435 miles) from the Ukrainian border.
This incident represents the latest in a series of strikes by Kyiv targeting oil facilities within Russia.
In a post on the Telegram messaging application, Zelensky noted, "In particular, the Defense Forces of Ukraine operated against targets associated with the Yaroslavl oil refinery – about 700 kilometers from our territory."
Ukraine has intensified its operations within Russian territory, aiming to disrupt the Russian oil industry and reduce the revenue Moscow utilizes to fund the war in Ukraine. While global energy prices have risen during the conflict, sanctions regarding Moscow's oil sales have been eased. Kyiv has also increasingly employed the tactic of striking the same facilities multiple times.
The Ukrainian defense ministry reported via X that Ukraine struck 11 Russian oil facilities as of May 21, including Kirishi, one of Russia's largest refineries. Official data and sources indicate that virtually all major oil refineries in central Russia have been forced to halt or scale back fuel output in recent days following Ukrainian drone attacks.
"We are bringing the war back home – to Russia – and that's only fair," Zelensky stated.
